Environmental studies: A municipal government was concerned that its development and growth was not compatible with its aspiration to be environmentally sustainable. Technical Studies, Inc. developed an innovative plan that would make the city environmentally sustainable. The project was subsequently complemented by the development of the metric that makes it possible to measure progress in achieving the goal of sustainability.

Urban and regional planning: Municipal governments today enjoy greater autonomy and greater responsibility for economic development. The division of urban and regional planning has been key in the development of municipal and regional economic development initiatives and in the organization of municipal space. The focus of these initiatives has been the development of strategies that leverage local resources by forging partnerships between municipal governments, regional entities, academia and private enterprise, and maximizing synergies with development programs at the national level.
